Sixth Form College

Welcome to the Sixth Form at Collingwood School and Media Arts College.

Sixth form is an exciting next step for our young people on their pathway toward adulthood. Staff at Collingwood recognise and understand that change can present challenges to students. We want young people to be happy and enjoy their learning, seize opportunities and make the most of their valuable time here.

Mission statement:

The Sixth Form at Collingwood School and Media Arts College provides a curriculum which allows young people to grow in a safe, welcoming and stimulating environment. Students are given the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, qualifications and attributes which will equip them for a successful future in further education, employment and life.

In the sixth form students continue to develop literacy and numeracy skills. An accredited IT course continues with internet safety being an integral part. In addition a broad range of subjects, including vocational are offered for young people who have different starting points. The curriculum evolves and reflects the needs of our young people. A range of courses are currently accredited through AQA, ASDAN, Edexcel and NCFE.

Teaching takes place in Collingwood School and benefits from the specialist teaching staff and classrooms. A new development in the sixth form has been the opening of ‘The Learning Lodge’ June 2015 in memory of Mr. Jim Rudd a Collingwood Governor. This is an excellent resource with an emphasis on the life skill curriculum and transition.

The outward looking curriculum offers an increasing emphasis on the development of independence and life skills; opportunities to experience work place settings and group visits to Further Education Colleges and training providers. The sixth form benefit from regular visits out to develop social opportunities in the locality, personal safety when out and greater confidence when using public transport.

A regular sixth form forum is held weekly to share student successes. Students are offered a three day residential each year. This is very popular and the take up is high. Students have visited York, London and Edinburgh. Many of our students have also engaged with the National Citizen Service ( NCS) and access a further residential and a community project in their holiday time.
